CBM and volumetric weight calculator

Enter the carton size and quantity; see the total volume and the weight you will be charged for in each mode.

How is it calculated?

Volume (m³) = length × width × height (cm) × quantity ÷ 1,000,000.

Volumetric weight converts the cost of light but bulky freight into weight. The chargeable weight is the greater of gross and volumetric weight.

Sea groupage (LCL) is charged per "W/M": 1 m³ counts the same as 1 tonne and the greater is charged.

Assumptions

  • Air freight divisor 6000 cm³/kg (IATA).
  • Express courier divisor 5000 cm³/kg.
  • Road groupage: 1 m³ = 333 kg (common in Europe).
  • If your carrier contract uses a different divisor, the contract applies.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBM?

CBM (cubic metre) is the volume a shipment occupies. Container and groupage quotes are given per CBM.

Why am I charged for more than the gross weight?

When freight is light but bulky the carrier charges for space: if volumetric weight exceeds gross weight, volumetric weight is charged.

How many CBM fit in a 20 ft container?

A standard 20' container has about 33 m³ inside; in practice 25–28 m³ of cargo fits once pallets and stacking gaps are allowed for.
